A Japanese phrase meaning ‘one quarter’, commonly applied to a silver coin in the form of a thin rectangular plate (with rounded corners), in use before 1871; it was the quarter of a riô or tael, and worth about 1s. 4d. sterling: see also quot. 1900. ‘The name is still sometimes applied to the quarter of the dollar or yen.’ ( N.E.D.)
