Etymology: < leaf n.1 + tea n.1, originally after Chinese yèchá (in sǎnyèchá (14th cent. or earlier) < sǎn to scatter + leaf + chá tea: see cha n.).

a. Tea chiefly composed of loose whole leaves as opposed to tea in powdered, compressed, or brick form (see brick tea n.), considered to be of a superior quality. Also in later use more generally: tea stored loose and sold in a carton or other container rather than in individual tea bags; loose tea. Cf. loose-leaf adj. Additions.
