Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: idio- comb. form, chromatic adj.
Etymology: < idio- comb. form + chromatic adj., after German idiochromatisch ( C. F. Naumann Elemente der Mineralogie (1846) 126).
Mineralogy.
Of a mineral: deriving its colour or optical properties from the chemicals which are an essential part of its composition. Cf. allochromatic adj.
