单词 hysterica passio
释义

hysterica passion.

Brit. /hᵻˌstɛrᵻkə ˈpasɪəʊ/, U.S. /hᵻˌstɛrəkə ˈpæsioʊ/
Forms: 1600s histerica passio, 1600s historica passio, 1600s– hysterica passio.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin hysterica passio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin hysterica passio hysteric passion (1572 or earlier) < hysterica , feminine of hystericus hysteric adj. + passio passion n., after Hellenistic Greek ὑστερικὰ πάθη (neuter plural) hysteric passion. Compare hysteric passion n. at hysteric n. and adj. Compounds, hysterical passion n. at hysterical adj. and n. Compounds.Compare also ancient Greek ὑστερικὴ πνίξ ( > post-classical Latin pnix hysterice (5th cent.)), lit. hysterical choking, associated with the womb by ancient medical writers.
1. Originally: a (supposed) physical disorder of women attributed to displacement or dysfunction of the uterus, characterized particularly by a sensation of fullness in the abdomen and chest, with choking or breathlessness. Later also: a (supposed) disorder with similar symptoms affecting men. Cf. hysterical passion n. at hysterical adj. and n. Compounds. Now historical. In quots. 1603 and 1608 used with reference to men, at a time when the disorder was described in the medical literature as affecting women only. The significance of this is a matter of continuing debate among commentators; for a review see K. L. Peterson in Shakespeare Q. (2006) 57 1-22.In later use chiefly with reference to quot. 1608.
