Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French identique; Latin identicus.
Etymology: < French identique (1610) or its etymon post-classical Latin identicus identical, the same in quality or attributes (14th cent. in British sources; from 15th cent. in continental sources) < ident- (in identitas identity n.) + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. Compare Spanish idéntico (a1589 in idénticamente , adverb), Portuguese idêntico (1706), Italian identico (1639). Compare earlier identical adj.
