Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Hydrilla.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Hydrilla, genus name (1814) < post-classical Latin hydrius of or relating to water (4th cent.; < ancient Greek ὕδωρ water (see hydro- comb. form) + classical Latin -ius , suffix forming adjectives) + -illa -illa suffix.
Botany.
A freshwater plant with heavily branching stems, small transparent flowers, and whorls of narrow leaves, Hydrilla verticillata (family Hydrocharitaceae); cf. water thyme n. 2. Also (in form Hydrilla): the genus itself.Hydrilla is native to the Old World but is now considered an invasive weed in North America.Valid publication of the genus name: L. C. Richard Mém. Cl. Sci. Math. Inst. France 1811 (1814) ii. 9.
