Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch ionnen , geonnen , gonnen (Dutch gunnen ), Old Saxon giunnan (Middle Low German gunnen ), Old High German giunnan (Middle High German gunnen , German gönnen ) < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of unne v.The Old English (Northumbrian) imperative forms geonn, gionn apparently show substitution of the present singular stem onn . The early Middle English past tense form iȝuðe shows the development of a palatal glide.
Obsolete.
transitive. To grant; to allow. Also with that-clause or infinitive as object. Cf. unne v.In Old English (and sometimes in early Middle English) with dative of person and genitive of the thing granted.
