Etymology: < Spanish pinsapo (1492) < pino pine n.² + the pre-Romance base of Old French sap a kind of fir (related to Old French, Middle French, French sapin , classical Latin sappīnus sapin n.). The Spanish term was adopted slightly earlier in scientific Latin as the specific epithet of Abies pinsapo (E. Boissier 1838, in Bibliothèque Universelle de Genève 13 406).

The Spanish fir, Abies pinsapo, native to mountainous regions of south-west Spain and Morocco, which is characterized by short, radially arranged needles. Also pinsapo fir.
