单词 hot cockles
释义

hot cocklesn.

Brit. /ˌhɒt ˈkɒklz/, U.S. /ˌhɑt ˈkɑkəlz/
Forms: 1500s hot cocles, 1600s hote cockles, 1600s– hot cockles.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hot adj., an element of uncertain origin.
Etymology: < hot adj. + a second element of uncertain origin, perhaps the plural of cockle n.2, although if so the semantic motivation is unclear (perhaps compare later cockle n.2 Phrases 2, and perhaps also earlier hot-cockled adj.).There is no evidence either for a French plural noun *hautes coquilles denoting this or a similar game, which has sometimes been suggested as the etymon of the English word (apparently earliest by S. Skinner Etymologicon linguæ Anglicanæ (1671) at Hot cockles), or for a similar sense of French coquille cockle n.2 The French name of the game is main chaude (see hot hand n.).
Now historical.
1. A game in which one player lies face downwards, or kneels down with the eyes covered, and attempts to guess which of the other players has struck him or her on the back.
