Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀμϕιδρομία, plural noun (use as noun of neuter plural of ἀμϕίδρομος running both ways, encompassing, enclosing ( < ἀμϕι- amphi- prefix + -δρομος : see -drome comb. form) + -ία -ia suffix1) + -ical suffix.Compare post-classical Latin amphidromia (a1536), French amphidromie (1608 or earlier). The Amphidromia was so called because friends of the parents carried the child around the hearth before naming it.
Obsolete.
Of or relating to the Amphidromia, an ancient Attic festival held to mark the naming of a child.

1681 Blount's Glossographia (ed. 5) Amphidromical, pertaining to the fifth day from the birth, when the child was purified, by carrying it round the fire, and having its name given.
