单词 heronsbill
释义

heronsbilln.

Brit. /ˈhɛrənzbɪl/, /ˈhɛrn̩zbɪl/, U.S. /ˈhɛrənzˌbɪl/
Forms: 1500s–1600s hearons bill, 1600s 1800s– heronsbill, 1800s– heron's bill.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: heron n., bill n.2
Etymology: < the genitive of heron n. + bill n.2 Originally (in sense ’cranesbill’) after early modern Dutch oyevaersbeck (1554 in the passage translated in quot. 1578; Dutch ooievaarsbek ), literally ‘stork's bill’, itself after post-classical Latin geranium geranium n., which originally included plants now subsumed under the genera Pelargonium (see pelargonium n.) and Geranium as well as Erodium. In later use (in sense ’storksbill’) after scientific Latin Erodium, genus name (W. Aiton 1789, in Hortus Kewensis II. 414; < ancient Greek ἐρωδιός heron (see herodian n.2) + an ending apparently modelled on that of post-classical Latin geranium geranium n.). The plants are so called on account of the elongated shape of their seed capsules; compare quots. 1578, 1864. Compare German Reiherschnabel (late 18th cent.). Compare earlier stork's bill n., and also geranium n., crane's-bill n.
Now chiefly North American.
Any of the herbaceous plants comprising the genus Erodium (family Geraniaceae), resembling the cranesbills and found widely in the northern hemisphere; a storksbill. Formerly also: a cranesbill (genus Geranium).

2009 P. Welsh Southern Califormia Org. Gardening (ed. 3) April. 164/1 This is why geraniums are known as cranesbills and why erodiums are called heronsbills. It's a shame pelargoniums didn't get the common name storksbill.
