Origin: From proper names. Etymon: proper name Herod.
Etymology: < the names of Herod the Great and Herod Antipas (see Herodian n.1 and adj.). Compare post-classical Latin Herodes , denoting a person likened to Herod Antipas (1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1581).

A person likened in some way to Herod the Great or his son Herod Antipas, esp. in displaying cruelty, tyranny, and wickedness. Cf. out-Herod v.The reference to Herod the Great (c74–4 b.c.), king of Judaea 37–4 b.c., is chiefly with allusion to the Massacre of the Innocents (Matthew 2:16: see innocent n. 2), and the reference to Herod Antipas (22 b.c.–40 a.d.), tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea 4 b.c.–40 a.d., alludes to his role in the death of John the Baptist (Matthew 14:6–11) and the trial of Jesus (Luke 23:7–12).
