Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -phyllous comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -phyllous comb. form. With sense 2 compare post-classical Latin monophyllos (in Greek characters in C. Clusius Rariorum Plantarum Historiæ (1601) I. 269), scientific Latin monophylla , specific epithet (1753). Compare Hellenistic Greek μονόϕυλλος one-leaved, French monophylle (1709). Compare earlier tetraphyllous adj. at tetra- comb. form 1, and also biphyllous adj., diphyllous adj., triphyllous adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mǫnofi·ləs) /mɒnəʊˈfɪləs/.
