Etymology: Old English hęretoga = Old Frisian hęrtoga , -tiga , Old Saxon hęritogo (Middle Dutch hertoge , -toch , -tich , Dutch hertog ), Old High German hęrizogo (Middle High German herzoge , German herzog ), Old Norse hertogi (Swedish hertig , Danish hertug ); < hęri , hęre here n.1 army + Old English -toga , Old Low German -togo , Old High German -zogo agent-noun, < weak grade tug- , tog- of *teuhan , Old English *téohan , téon to lead: see tee v.1 (cognate with Latin ducere, dux). The Historical forms heretoch, -togh represent medieval Latin heretochius.
Anglo-Saxon History. The leader of an army; the commander of the militia of a shire or district. As it was rendered by Latin dux. and was the same word as German herzog, it was taken by 17th and 18th century writers as = Duke.
