Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin henoticon, Greek ἑνωτικόν.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin henoticon, henoticum (also enoticon, enoticum) (6th cent.), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek ἑνωτικόν, use as noun of neuter of Hellenistic Greek ἑνωτικός henotic adj. Compare henotic adj.Compare Middle French, French hénotique, noun (1584 or earlier).
Church History.
Usually with the. A decree issued by the emperor Zeno in 482, with the aim of restoring religious unity between the pro-Chalcedonian see of Constantinople and the anti-Chalcedonian see of Alexandria (cf. Chalcedonian adj.). Also: the doctrine expounded in this decree, which promotes unity between religious factions.Cf. henotic adj.
