Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἡγέμων.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἡγέμων leader, commander, chief < ἡγεῖσθαι to lead (see hegumen n.) + -μων, suffix forming nouns. Compare German Hegemon (1766).
A leading or paramount power; a dominant state or person.
