单词 enterclose
释义

enterclosen.

Brit. /ˈɛntəkləʊs/, U.S. /ˈɛn(t)ərˌkloʊs/
Forms: late Middle English enterclos, late Middle English entreclos, late Middle English–1600s (1900s– historical) enterclose.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French entreclos.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French entreclos (in Anglo-Norman also entreclose , feminine noun) partition, dividing wall (12th cent. in Old French) < entre- enter- prefix + clos (see close n.1). Compare earlier interclose n. and see discussion at that entry.Sense 2 apparently lacks a parallel in French and shows a specific semantic development within English, probably influenced by parclose n.
1. A partition or screen, esp. one dividing up the interior of a building; = interclose n. 1. Also attributive in enterclose wall. Cf. parclose n. 1a. Now historical.
