Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: ancient Greek ἔντερα , -ate suffix2.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἔντερα bowels (see enteron n.) + -ate suffix2. Compare earlier anenterate adj., anenterous adj.Compare scientific Latin Enterata , former subclass name (H. Lawson 1861, in Dublin Q. Jrnl. Sci. 1 381; compare -a suffix2). N.E.D. (1891) gives the pronunciation as (e·ntĕrĕt) /ˈɛntərət/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
Of an organism: having an intestinal tract. Contrasted with anenterous adj.
