Forms: 1600s elleborism, 1600s helleborisme, 1800s– helleborism.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin elleborismus; Greek ἐλλεβορισμός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin elleborismus purgative made from hellebore (5th cent.) or its etymon ancient Greek ἐλλεβορισμός, ἑλλεβορισμός treatment with hellebore < ἐλλεβορίζειν , ἑλλεβορίζειν helleborize v. + -ισμός -ism suffix. Compare French elleborisme (1623 in the passage translated in quot. 1640), Spanish eleborismo, heleborismo (a1611, rare).
Medicine. Now rare.
Originally: †any of various medicinal preparations containing hellebore (probably Veratrum album) (obsolete). In later use: treatment, esp. homoeopathic treatment, or poisoning with hellebore ( Veratrum or Helleborus species).
