Etymology: Apparently a specific semantic development of hazel n., with reference either to the colour of the soil or to the perception that the hazel tree grows especially well in it. Compare hazelly adj.¹ and perhaps also earlier hazeled adj.Compare German Haselboden, (more usually) Hasselboden ‘ground consisting of gravel, reddish clay, and blackish earth’, and Haselerde, in the same sense (both late 18th cent.).
