Origin: A borrowing from Korean. Etymon: Korean Hangeul.
Etymology: < Korean Hangeul (also transliterated as Han'gŭl and hān kul) (c1910) < Han- (relating to) Korea, (especially) South Korea (see hanbok n.) + geul script, alphabet. Compare earlier onmun n.The alphabet was developed in the 15th cent. (compare the note at the definition) as an alternative to Chinese characters, but was not consistently used until the late 19th cent., when it was adopted for official publications.
The Korean alphabet, which consists of characters representing consonants and vowels composed in part of smaller elements representing phonetic features such as place of articulation, which are combined into larger units representing syllables. Traditionally ascribed to King Sejong (1419–50), Hangul is the official writing system for the Korean language. It is called Hangeul in South Korea and Joseongeul in North Korea.
