Etymology: Old English háligdóm = Middle Dutch heilichdoem (Dutch heiligdom ), Old High German heilîgtuom (German heiligtum ), Old Norse helgidómr (Danish helligdom ), < Old Germanic *hailag- , Old English hálig , holy adj. and n.: see -dom suffix. The substitution of -dam, -dame, in the suffix was apparently due to popular etymology, the word being taken to denote ‘Our Lady’.
