Etymology: < (i) Yiddish yontev, and its etymon (ii) Hebrew yōm ṭōḇ, lit. ‘good day’ < yōm day + ṭōḇ good.The spelling of the Yiddish word uses the same Hebrew letters as its etymon, but its pronunciations (reflected in the β. forms) show assimilation of the final m of the first element and reduction of the vowel of the second element, both reflecting an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew word. Singular forms with final f reflect regular devoicing of the final consonant in the Yiddish word.
