Etymology: < the name of Tell Halaf (Arabic Tel Ḥalaf), an archaeological site in north-eastern Syria, near the border with Turkey + -ian suffix.

Of or relating to a chalcolithic culture dating to the sixth millennium b.c., centred on an area corresponding to south-eastern Turkey and northern parts of Syria and Iraq, and characterized by a distinctive style of pottery painted with (often polychrome) geometric and animal designs.The Halafian culture is named after the site of Tell Halaf, in north-eastern Syria, where evidence of the pottery was found.
