Origin: A borrowing from Korean. Etymon: Korean hagwon.
Etymology: < Korean hagwon (also sometimes transliterated as hagwŏn) (1930s) < hag, variant (before w) of hak to study + -won school, institution (both elements < Middle Chinese).
A private school or educational institute, common in South Korea, which provides supplementary education and is typically attended by students outside of usual school hours. Cf. cram school n.
