Etymology: < Old French emoroyde (13th cent. in Godefroy Suppl.), in 16th cent. hemorrhoïdes (Paré), < Latin haemorrhoida (Pliny), < Greek αἱμορροΐς, accusative singular αἱμορροΐδα, adjective ‘discharging blood’, plural αἱμορροΐδες (sc. ϕλέβες) veins liable to discharge blood, bleeding piles; derivative of αἱμόρροος flowing with blood, < αἱμο- blood- + -ροος flowing. Compare Italian emmorroide, Spanish hemorroíde, -ída.
1. plural. A disease characterized by tumours of the veins about the anus; = pile n.4 Rarely singular. One of such tumours, a pile.

Etymology: < Latin haemorrhoïs, haemorrhoïdem (Pliny), a kind of poisonous serpent, < Greek αἱμορροΐς : etymology as in haemorrhoid n.1 The forms hæmorrhe and -rhus go back upon medieval Latin haemorrhous (Du Cange), Greek αἱμόρροος.
Obsolete.
A serpent whose bite was fabled to cause unstanchable bleeding.
