释义 | blockan alen. Scottish (north-eastern). Now rare. A drink taken upon the conclusion of a bargain. Sc. National Dict. (at cited word) records this sense as still in use in Banffshire and Aberdeenshire in 1935. Π 1825 J. Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. Suppl. at To Block Blockin-ale, the drink which is taken between parties at the conclusion of a bargain. 1827 Inverness Courier 10 Oct. 4/1 At last an' lang a niffer's struck—Jock to the bargain wishes luck;—Each thinkin that he had done well, They're aff to drink the blockan-ale. 1881 W. Gregor Notes Folk-lore N.-E. Scotl. 189 Both went to a tent..when payment was made, and the ‘blockan ale’ drunk. 1921 Aberdeen Daily Jrnl. 2 Nov. 4/4 An old crofter..and his helpmate, Bell, went to the fair to sell a weaned calf.
