Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Meconopsis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Meconopsis ( G. A. Viguier Hist. nat., méd., et économique des pavots et des Argémones (1814) ii. ii. 48) < Hellenistic Greek μηκωνο- (see meconology n.) + scientific Latin -opsis -opsis comb. form. Compare French méconopsis (1873 in Larousse).
A genus of flowering plants of the family Papaveraceae, mainly centred in central Asia, especially the Himalayan region (as the Tibetan or blue poppy, Meconopsis betonicifolia), but also including the Welsh poppy, M. cambrica, of western Europe; (also meconopsis) a plant of this genus, especially one of the (frequently blue-flowered) kinds grown for ornament.
