Etymology: Middle English < French haubergeon (12th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), derivative (treated as diminutive) of Old French hauberc , now haubert : see hauberk n. and -oon suffix. In English from an early date reduced to ha-, though examples of hau-, haw-, under French influence, contemporary or historical, occur down to the present day. The word has been since the 16th cent. only historical, and it was apparently after it had become obsolete as a living word, that the pronunciation /həˈbɜːdʒən/ or /həˈbɜdʒiːɒn/, found in Milton, Butler, Glover, etc., and in some modern dictionaries, arose.
a. A sleeveless coat or jacket of mail or scale armour, originally smaller and lighter than a hauberk n., but sometimes apparently the same as that.
