Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: scintilla n., -ous suffix; Latin scintilla , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scintilla n. or its etymon classical Latin scintilla + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin scintillosus (6th cent.). Compare earlier scintillously adv., scintillose adj. N.E.D. (1910) indicates the stress as scinˈtillous.
Now rare.
Sparkling, scintillating (literal and figurative).
