grann.2

Brit. /ɡran/, U.S. /ɡræn/
Forms: also with capital initial.
Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: granny n.
Etymology: Shortened from granny n.An apparently isolated example of gran in the sense ‘grandfather’ occurs slightly earlier:1826 Portfolio 10 June 50/1 Ned Sly one morning going out to poach, Met his Grandfather mounted on a coach: ‘Oh, oh!’ cries Ned, ‘why really my old Gran, Of late you're quite become a journeyman.’ (For similar use of granny see Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. (Suppl., 1825) at cited word.) In the absence of intervening evidence it is uncertain whether gran n.1 is connected with this.
An informal term for: one's grandmother; a grandmother. Also as a form of address or prefixed to a personal name.
