Etymology: < green adj. + sand n.2
1. Geology. Also with capital initial. Sand or imperfectly consolidated sandstone of a greenish colour, often resulting from the presence of glauconite; (also) the mineral glauconite. Also: a deposit or stratum of such rock; spec. each of two rock formations (in full Upper Greensand, Lower Greensand) consisting largely of glauconitic sandstone of early Cretaceous age, occurring across much of southern England, and lying respectively above and below the gault clay.
