Etymology: < governess n. + general adj., in sense 1 after Middle French gouvernante generale (?a1570 in the passage translated in quot. 1575; French †gouvernante generale ); compare Dutch †gouvernante generael (1565 in the passage translated in quot. 1581 at governante n. 1, or earlier). Compare slightly later Governor-General n.
