Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French goboné.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman goboné, gobouné (c1334 or earlier), use as adjective of past participle of goboner to cut into pieces (see gobbon v.). Compare French †gobone , †gobonne (17th cent. in French passages quoted in English works, rare). Compare gobonated adj. N.E.D. (1900) gives the pronunciation as (gǫ̆bōu·ni) /ɡəˈbəʊnɪ/.
Heraldry.
Esp. of a bordure: composed of a row of squares of two alternate tinctures, (sometimes) spec. a colour (colour n.1 1b) and a metal (metal n. 3); = componé adj. Cf. gobonated adj., goboned adj.Chiefly as postmodifier.
