Etymology: < French à la russe, literally ‘(in the) Russian style’ (2nd half of the 18th cent. in general sense with allusion e.g. to styles of dress and architecture, 1822 in specific sense with allusion to a style of dining) < à la à la prep. + russe , use as noun of the feminine of russ Russian (see Russ adj.).
