单词 gilet
释义

giletn.

Brit. /ˈʒiːleɪ/, /ˈʒɪleɪ/, U.S. /ʒᵻˈleɪ/
Forms: 1600s– gillet (now nonstandard), 1700s– gilet.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French gilet.
Etymology: < French gilet waistcoat (1665 as gillet in the passage translated in quot. 1687), undergarment worn on the skin and made of wool or cotton (early 19th cent. or earlier), ultimately (via Italian) < Ottoman Turkish yelek yelek n., with remodelling of the second syllable after -et -et suffix1, which occurs in other names of garments, e.g. corselet corslet n., mantelet mantlet n.Transmission of the Turkish word into European languages. Transmission of the word into other European languages was via various Italian regional forms. Compare ( < Turkish) Italian regional (Genoa) gilecco , (Naples) gelecco , (Calabria) gileccu , (Sicily) ggileccu (17th cent. or earlier), and ( < Italian) Spanish chaleco (1605 as gileco , jaleco ), Catalan jalec , jaleco , Portuguese jaleco (all 18th cent.). Standard Italian gilè (beginning of the 19th cent.; end of the 18th cent. as giletto ) is < French, as is German Gilet (late 18th cent. as Chilet ). Although it has often been suggested that the proximate source of the forms in Western European languages was Arabic jalīka , supposedly denoting a garment worn by Christian slaves on the galleys, the Arabic word is a comparatively recent borrowing from Italian into Algerian Arabic (where it also occurs as jīlaka , jaylaka , and denotes various upper garments worn by women) and does not occur in other varieties. However, quot. 1687 with its setting in Tunis may suggest direct borrowing < a contemporary Tunisian Arabic parallel (not attested in written sources). Historical variation in pronunciation. N.E.D. (1899) gives the pronunciation as (ʒile) /ʒile/.
