Etymology: < post-classical Latin geometer (5th or 6th cent. in Boethius; from 12th cent. in British sources), variant of classical Latin geōmetrēs (also geōmetra ) land-measurer, geometrician < ancient Greek γεωμέτρης < γεω- geo- comb. form + μετρεῖν to measure (see metrete n.); compare -meter comb. form2. Compare Middle French geometre , French géomètre (first third of the 14th cent. in sense ‘person who studies or is skilled in geometry as a discipline of mathematics’, 1637 in sense ‘land surveyor’), Catalan geòmetra (14th cent.), Spanish geómetra (1422), Portuguese geómetra (15th cent.), Italian geometra (a1313), and also German Geometer (Middle High German (in late sources) gēometras , gēometer ), Dutch geometer (1580). The caterpillar of a geometrid moth, which typically travels by clasping with the front legs, drawing the hind end forward so that the back loops in an arch, then clasping with the prolegs at the hind end and straightening to extend the head. Also (more fully geometer moth): an adult geometrid moth.The caterpillars have various popular names alluding to their manner of progression, including inchworm, looper, and measuring-worm.
