Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin geoponica, geoponicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin geoponica (plural) treatise on agriculture (1539 or earlier), use as noun (after Byzantine Greek τὰ γεωπονικά ) of neuter plural of geoponicus geoponic adj.: see -ic suffix 2. Compare Middle French Geoponiques (plural noun) treatise on agriculture (1578 in a translation of Philostratus, or earlier; French Géoponiques).
Chiefly with singular agreement. Agriculture, agricultural science; (the title of) a treatise on this subject. In later use also: the practice of growing plants in soil or other solid rooting medium (as opposed to a liquid medium). Cf. hydroponics n.
