Etymology: Apparently < German Generalissimus (1634 (as title of Albrecht von Wallenstein, supreme commander of the Imperial Army of the Holy Roman Empire in the Thirty Years' War; compare quot. 1637) or earlier; in early use with Latin inflectional endings), use as noun of post-classical Latin generalissimus , adjective (4th cent.; superlative of classical Latin generālis general adj.), after Italian generalissimo generalissimo n. Compare Swedish generalissimus (1649), French généralissime (a1612), both after Italian. Compare earlier generalissimo n.In quot. 1948 after Russian generalissimus (1731; 1945 as honorary title given to Stalin).
