Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rhoptrie.

Etymology: < French rhoptrie (J. Sénaud 1965, in Progress in Protozool. 189), apparently < ancient Greek ῥόπαλον club (see rhopalic adj.), with arbitrary ending.

Zoology.

A club-shaped, lysosome-like secretory organelle which is found in the motile stages of parasitic protozoans of the phylum Apicomplexa (which includes such organisms as Toxoplasma gondii) and releases its contents inside the cells of a host organism.
