Forms: 1800s– rhotacise, 1800s– rhotacize.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Greek. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Greek ῥωτακίζειν ; rhotacism n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: Either < Byzantine Greek ῥωτακίζειν to make overmuch or wrong use of the letter ( < ancient Greek ῥῶ rho n. + -ίζειν -ize suffix, with inserted -τακ- probably after Hellenistic Greek ἰωτακισμός iotacism n.), or independently < rhotac- (in rhotacism n.) + -ize suffix.
Linguistics.
1. transitive. To change (a sound, esp. the phoneme /s/) into the phoneme /r/. Also: to alter the form and pronunciation of (a word) by changing one of its sounds, esp. the phoneme /s/, into the phoneme /r/.
