Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps originally an error (made by European observers) for Arabic zārūq, type of dhow (e.g. a misreading of the initial z as g on a handwritten note), although this does not account for the final syllable. Compare later English zarook, zaruk (1946 or earlier; < Arabic).Some discussions in 19th-cent. English sources (e.g. quot. 1855) appear to rely on a description in F.-E. Pâris Essai sur la construction navale des peuples extra-europeens (1841) 13–14, but the spelling of the French word as †garoo-kuh suggests that it is itself < English.
