释义

Gelugpan.adj.

Brit. /ɡɛˈluːɡˌpɑː/, U.S. /ɡəˈluɡˌpɑ/
Inflections: Plural Gelugpas, unchanged.
Forms: 1800s– Dge-lugs-pa, 1800s– dGe-lugs-pa, 1800s– dGe lugs pa, 1800s– Gelug-pa, 1800s– Gelugpa, 1800s– Geluk-pa, 1800s– Gelukpa, 1900s– Dgelugspa, 1900s– Dge lugs pa, 1900s– dGelugspa, 1900s– Geluks-pa, 1900s– Gelukspa.
Origin: A borrowing from Tibetan. Etymon: Tibetan dge.lugs.pa.
Etymology: < Tibetan dge.lugs.pa < dge.lugs , the name of the Yellow Hat school of Tibetan Buddhism ( < dge virtue + lugs way, manner) + -pa , suffix forming nouns denoting a person. Compare earlier Yellow Hat adj. and n. at yellow adj. and n. Compounds 2a.English forms showing d- or -s- reflect the spelling of the etymon in Tibetan, which is based on the pronunciation of an earlier stage of that language. The placement of the capital letter in such forms reflects different transliteration conventions; Tibetan script does not have equivalents to capital and lower-case letters.
