γ. early Middle English awlite.

Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Old Frisian andlēte , ondlēte , Old Dutch antlito , anlito (Middle Dutch antlit ), Old High German antlizzi (in late sources; Middle High German antlitze , German Antlitz ), Old Icelandic andlit , annlit (Icelandic andlit ), Norwegian andlit , Old Swedish andlite , anlite (Swedish anlete ), Old Danish andled (Danish andlet ), and further with Gothic andawleizn < the Germanic base of and- prefix + the Germanic base of Old English wlītan to look (see litten v.1).The noun shows different stem formations in the Germanic languages. In Old English it inflects as a weak masculine or (less commonly) a strong masculine. The Middle English forms in -lete , -leth could be of phonological origin (compare Old English forms with back mutation, such as Anglian ondwliot- ), but may perhaps reflect influence from early Scandinavian (compare the Danish forms cited above). In the α. forms the prefix is sometimes written as the Tironian note (see and conj.1, adv., and n.1); some forms listed in the Forms section reflect editorial decisions to expand this to either and- or ond- . With the β. forms compare the discussion at and- prefix. With the γ. forms perhaps compare a- prefix3.
Obsolete.
A person's face or countenance; (also) a person's appearance or looks.
