Etymology: < Chinook Jargon hiyu muckamuck, literally ‘plenty of food’, probably originally with reference to high-status givers of potlatch < hayu plenty, much ( < Nootka ḥayu ten) + muckamuck food (see muckamuck n.¹). Forms with high reflect (folk-etymological) remodelling of the first element after high adj. Compare also high muckety-muck n.

colloquial (originally and chiefly North American). Frequently depreciative.
