Etymology: < free adj. + born adj. Compare Old Frisian frībern , Middle Low German vrībōren , Old Swedish friborin (Swedish friboren ). Compare earlier freeman n. and also freewoman n.In quot. c1225 at sense A. 1 perhaps to be interpreted as a noun phrase. Also attested as a surname: Richard Freborn (1256).
