Forms: Middle English fyton, 1500s fytten, fitton(e, 1500s–1600s fitten.
Etymology: Of unknown origin. The suggestion that it is a corruption of fiction is inadmissible. The form coincides curiously with the corruption of Latin python found in various Germanic languages: Old Norse fítón, Middle Dutch fytoen necromancy, sorcery.
Obsolete.
