Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French ragamas, ragmas, racamas.

Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ragamas, ragmas (1403 or earlier), variant of Middle French racamaz, racamas type of embroidered fabric (1350), ultimately < Arabic raqm embroidery, embroidered cloth (compare raqama to embroider), probably via Italian †racamare , †raccamare to embroider (late 13th cent. as past participle †racamato ; now ricamare with assimilation of the first element to ri- re- prefix). Compare post-classical Latin ratamas, ragomas, ragemas (1398, 1401, 1415 respectively in British sources).

Now historical.
