Etymology: < fine n.1 + roll n.1, after post-classical Latin rotulus finium (1316 or earlier in British sources). Compare also post-classical Latin rotulus oblatorum (see oblata n.1).
Now historical.
An exchequer roll containing a record of debts or promises of payment owed to the Crown (typically in return for a concession or favour), or gifts or offerings made to the monarch by a subject or subjects. Usually in plural. Cf. Oblata Roll n. at oblata n.1, Oblate Roll n. at Oblate n.2 (see quot. 1891).
