Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Partly from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: French Ansârié , -an suffix; proper name Anṣāriyya , -an suffix.
Etymology: < (i) French †Ansârié (1787 in the passage translated in quot. 1787; also †Ansariè ), and (ii) its etymon, the name of Jabal Anṣāriyya, the heartland of the Nusayri community in Syria ( < jabal mountain (see jebel n.) + Anṣāriyya , collective noun: see Ansayri n.) + -an suffix. Compare later Ansayri n., Nusayri n., which ultimately derive from the same Arabic etymon Nuṣayrī (see Nusayri n.).An unrelated homonym, denoting certain companions of the Prophet Muhammad ( < French Ansarien (1723 or earlier) < Arabic anṣār Ansar n. + French -ien -ian suffix), is occasionally attested in English; compare e.g.:1758 tr. F. A. de Marigny Hist. Arabians I. 37 The Mohagerians required he [sc. Muhammad] should be buried at Mecca..; the Ansarians [Fr. les Ansariens], at Medina.1850 W. Irving Mahomet & his Successors II. i. 16 The Ansarians..insisted on the superior claims of Medina.
Islam. Now rare.
A member of a minority Shiite sect practising a form of Islam with gnostic and animist elements; = Nusayri n. Cf. Ansayri n.Chiefly in French contexts, esp. in translations from French.
